What is a product carbon footprint?
A product carbon footprint assigns greenhouse gas emissions to a named good or service, not to your whole company. Report it in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kg CO2e) per unit. For a final product, a functional unit states the service, duration, and quality delivered. An intermediate product may use a declared amount, such as one kilogram of steel plate.
The boundary states which life-cycle stages the number covers. Gate-to-gate covers named production processes. Cradle-to-gate runs from material acquisition until the intermediate product leaves your gate. Cradle-to-grave adds distribution, use, and end-of-life. Record how the method treats packaging, transport, recycling, and biogenic carbon, meaning carbon from biological materials.
Why does a product carbon footprint matter to you?
A customer may ask for a PCF for one material, component, package, or service. Unilever says its Supplier Climate Programme focuses on priority suppliers and includes sharing product-level GHG footprint data in its climate-leadership criteria. Check whether the customer asked for a product, company, or customer-allocated footprint, then answer only that scope.
A corporate Scope 1, 2, and 3 inventory cannot answer a product request by itself. It combines emissions across the organisation. A PCF needs a product identifier, unit, process boundary, product data, and allocation method. Dividing a company total by units sold can omit upstream materials or misassign shared factory emissions.
How is a product carbon footprint calculated?
Start with the standard named in the request. Record any product-category rule, which gives calculation rules for that type of product. Define the product, unit, reference period, geography, and boundary. Map each included process. Collect product carbon data for materials, energy, fuel, transport, waste, direct emissions, and supplier footprints. Record each activity and factor value with its unit, geography, year, publisher, and primary or secondary classification.
Multiply each activity by its factor, add direct emissions, and assign shared processes to the product. First try to separate the shared process into measurable steps or redefine the unit so no split is needed. If you still need an allocation, explain the physical driver you used, such as mass, energy, or machine time. If unavoidable, use a physical relationship before an economic or other justified relationship. Sum the allocated emissions and divide by the declared units. If the customer uses PACT, record the included boundary processes, allocation rules, secondary factor sources, primary-data share, and kg CO2e per declared unit.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Reporting a number without saying whether the boundary is gate-to-gate, cradle-to-gate, or cradle-to-grave.
- Using tonnes of output as the denominator when the request specifies one piece, kilogram, litre, or a performance-based functional unit.
- Dividing a facility total equally across products without documenting why that allocation reflects energy, mass, machine time, or another physical relationship.
- Sending only the kg CO2e result without its period, factor versions, source records, exclusions, and workbook.
Is a PCF the same as a corporate carbon footprint?
No. A corporate footprint groups emissions by organisational boundary and Scopes 1, 2, and 3. A PCF follows one product through named processes and assigns the result to a unit. Product data can feed a customer's Scope 3 inventory, but the totals are not interchangeable.
What should you send when a customer asks for product carbon data?
Send the product ID, unit, kg CO2e per unit, boundary, period, geography, method, process map, material and energy data, factor names and versions, allocation rule, primary-data share, exclusions, and verification status. Include the calculation file and source documents for each line.
Can two product carbon footprints be compared?
Only after checking that both use the same unit, boundary, product rule, allocation, period, and treatment of recycling and removals. They must also use the same global warming potential values, which convert each greenhouse gas to CO2e. The GHG Protocol Product Standard does not support claims that one product is environmentally superior; those claims require additional specifications. A lower number alone does not prove better performance.
